Design and Performance Study of an Ultrasonic Bone Scalpel with Composite Horn Structure

Abstract The ultrasonic bone scalpel was often used in all kinds of clinical orthopedic surgery as a new type medical instrument. Based on the working theory and combined with design method quarter wavelength transducer horn, this study proposed an optimization for composite horn structure. structure simplified, its length shortened. Finite element analysis, modal harmonic response analysis were to optimize scalpel. performance explored through impedance amplitude measurement, temperature cutting tests, feasibility verified torque analysis. results showed that when force 4.0 N, resonance frequency 30,540 Hz, maximum could reach 62 ?m.
